In Asian culinary traditions, it's common to cook watermelon rind—along with green papayas and green jackfruits, including their seeds—as nutritious vegetables. I have prepared the rind as a delicious vegetable dish at one of the Boom festivals, and everyone was amazed by its flavor and versatility.
Watermelon belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family alongside cucumber, cantaloupe, and honeydew. Its high levels of antioxidants make it exceptionally effective in combating free radicals, potentially reducing symptoms of asthma, lowering blood pressure, and boosting both cognitive and digestive function. L-citrulline, a vital amino acid abundant in watermelon, helps reduce muscle soreness and supports cardiovascular health. What many don't realize is that the rind contains significantly more citrulline than the pink flesh—making whole-fruit juicing essential for maximum benefit.
This juice has helped several friends and clients manage fatty liver conditions naturally. In April 2021, one of my dentist's friends, a lawyer, completely reversed his fatty liver condition in just 30 days, as confirmed by his medical doctor through ultrasound examination.
My personal journey with watermelon began at the end of April 2010 when I wasn't in the mood for solid food and decided to juice a watermelon as the season started. What began as a one-day experiment evolved into an extraordinary six-month juice fast. My doctor friend, upon hearing of my commitment, encouraged me while advising caution regarding electrolyte balance. Throughout this period, I maintained my routine of drinking warm water with lemon juice and salt for two days, then on the third day warm water with lemon juice and honey every morning—a practice I had followed since age 16.
Despite exercising and meditating rigorously during the fast, I only lost 3 to 3.5 kilograms over six months, which was quite surprising. However, the benefits extended far beyond weight loss. My sleep became deep and restful, while my meditation felt light and elevated. My regular meditation practice of 1.5 to 2 hours twice daily expanded to 2-3 hours per session, with additional practices at noon and before bed.
My stamina and strength were exceptional throughout the fast. I worked out two hours daily at the gym, staying perfectly hydrated with watermelon juice. Alongside that, I jogged 3-5 kilometers four to five times weekly, all while functioning optimally on just 3-4 hours of sleep per night.
During those fasting days, I would purchase one whole watermelon to supply a day's worth of juice—typically 8 to 10 liters. Curious about the liquid content, I measured a 10-kilogram watermelon and consistently found it to be approximately 97% juice and 3% pulp. I became known among friends as a "watermelon junkie," and many have overcome various health challenges by embarking on 30-day watermelon and green vegetable juice programs, losing between 13 to 15 kilograms in the process.
In Europe, watermelons remain available for an extended period beyond peak season, as imports from Morocco continue until the end of September. As that season came to a close, I gradually transitioned back to solid food, bringing my remarkable fast to an end. Looking back, I can only describe it as a transformative experience that deepened my understanding of the body's incredible capacity for renewal and vitality.
