Camel Pose (Ustrasana)
Ustrasana, or Camel Pose, comes from the Samskrta words 'Uṣṭra' meaning camel, and 'asana' meaning posture. This powerful backbend is one of the most transformative poses in our yoga practice, offering profound benefits for both body and mind.
This asana works deeply on the lower three chakras—Muladhara, Svadhisthana, and Manipura—creating a foundation of stability while opening the heart center. The intense backward bend stimulates the abdominal region, helping to burn excess fat while strengthening the core muscles that support our vital energy.
Beyond its physical benefits, Ustrasana serves as a powerful tool for emotional regulation. By opening the chest and heart region, we create space for releasing stored anger and tension. The vulnerability required to drop the head back teaches us surrender and trust—essential qualities for spiritual growth.
Regular practice of this pose enhances spinal flexibility, improves posture, and stimulates the thyroid gland, supporting healthy metabolism. The deep opening through the front body also aids digestion and can help alleviate respiratory issues.
How to practice: Begin kneeling with shins parallel, engaging your core as you slowly arch backward. Place hands on your heels or blocks, allowing the head to release gently. Hold for 30 seconds, breathing deeply into the expanded chest cavity.
Practice with awareness and respect for your body's limits. This pose asks us to trust, to open, and to find strength in flexibility—lessons that extend far beyond our yoga mat into conscious living.
